Mohamed Nour al-Shemali is a student at Aleppo University. He documented abuses carried out by government security forces, for example through interviewing persons that had been internally displaced as a result of the conflict. He regularly discussed his findings with international media.
Security forces arrested him together with a friend on 1 December 2012 as he walked through the gates of the university. Syrian security forces, including Military Intelligence, had deployed there after a wave of student protest in 2012. The government has given no information about the reasons for his arrest or his legal status and his family was only informed about his arrest through students who had witnessed the events. Released detainees have claimed that they saw him both in a Military Intelligence branch in Damascus as well as a Military Intelligence branch in Aleppo.
