Peaceful activist sentenced to 15 years

Wala’ Adnan al-Akel was born in 1992 at Maliha- Damascus. She is a first year student at the Institute of Commerce, and she is a humanitarian activist who has been active with the opposition coordination committees in her area.

On 21 May 2013 Wala’ was headed alongside her friend to meet their other friend in Jormana. Upon arrival to the barrier, five males from the Popular Committees elements gathered around them and arrested them, forcing them into a car to transfer them to the Military Intelligence Branch 215 in Damascus. Wala’ underwent severe and violent investigations and remained in that branch for one month.

On 30 June 2013 Wala’ was transferred to the women’s prison in Adra where she continued to be a victim of harassment.

On 6 March 2014, Wala’ was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
