Samar Darwish was born in 1962 in Rankos village, Damascus countryside. She is a mother, and is the director of Madaya School in Damascus. She is a graduate of Damascus University’s Faculty of Science Department of Physics.

Samar has been active in the humanitarian and relief field in Damascus since the beginning of the Syrian peaceful protest.

Samar was arrested by the State security for the first time on 14 August 2012 for thirteen days, and was re-arrested in the following year by the State security on 23 August 2013 at a state security barrier in Jormana on the outskirts of Damascus, without a clear definition of the charge.

Two months after her arrest, on 23 October 2013 Samar is supposed to be transferred to Njha Prison in Rural Damascus. Samar’s family was not able to visit her in Njha prison, or even confirm her current location.
